What Claude Actually Is

Here's some good news before anything else: you already have the main skill this course requires. If you can describe what you want to a smart, patient colleague, you can use Claude. No coding. No technical background. Just words.

So what is Claude? It's an AI assistant made by Anthropic, and under the hood it does one thing extraordinarily well: it predicts which words should come next, based on patterns learned from an enormous amount of human writing. That sounds humble. What makes it powerful is that almost everything people create is made of language. Emails, obviously. But also plans, contracts, spreadsheet formulas, legal arguments, and computer code. Master language deeply enough, and you can work on all of it.

Hold onto this picture: Claude is a brilliant, endlessly patient collaborator. Available at 3 a.m. Never tired of your questions. Never annoyed by revision number twelve. And what this collaborator can actually do is far wider than most people guess.
